Together, these two fields have the potential to transform healthcare, businesses, industry, governance, education and society. There is a growing need for skilled individuals who will serve as data scientists, machine learning engineers, big-data engineers, machine learning operations in various industries, not-for-profits, government agencies, and other organizations. There is also a great scope for entrepreneurship.
The program offers strong preparation in computing, algorithms, statistical modeling, machine learning, optimization, artificial intelligence, management and analysis of massive data sets, data acquisition and data visualization.
The program focuses on topics such as reproducible data analysis, collaborative problem solving, visualization and communication, information security and ethical issues that arise in data science.
The industry-relevant curriculum gives you the skills to extract valuable insights from big data.
In this program, you will learn expertise in statistical modeling, data management, machine learning, data visualization, software engineering, research design,
data ethics, and user experience to meet the growing needs of industry, not-for-profits, government agencies, and other organizations.
In the first year (freshman), we teach mathematical foundations of data science along with linear algebra, calculus, probability, statistics and transforms. Students also learn basic data structures and programming skills.
In the second year (sophomore), we teach the fundamental skills needed for a data scientist and AI engineer: algorithms of data analysis, statistical programming, big data architecture, artificial intelligence, information security. Students also learn data structures, algorithms and selected topics in theorectical computer science.
In the third year (junior), we teach advanced machine learning concepts and their speciailizations in computer vision, NLP, speech processing, Time-series analysis, complex networks etc. Students can choose from a variety of computer systems courses such as operating systems, database, computer architecture, distributed systems etc. Students can start research via honors program and/or develop data science applications and products for solving real-world problems.
In the fourth year (senior), students may choose to develop one or two major data science projects and build significant expertise in one or two application domains of their choice.
